The historic military fortress Suomenlinna is situated on six islands just off Helsinki harbour. Suomenlinna is known for its architecture and nature preserve, and provides a peaceful working and living environment. The very centre of the Finnish capital is only 15 minutes away and easily accessible by regular ferry connections.
The studio house on Suomenlinna, situated a couple of hundred metres from the office of NIFCA, houses five studios with apartments for international artists and four guest apartments, offered for research residencies to international curators, journalists and researchers working with projects related to NIFCA's activities.
The studios and apartments are used as an active part of NIFCA's activities, eg. for the international residency programmes and artist exchanges, as well as for housing artists working on various NIFCA projects.
The studios can be applied for within the Residency programme for visual artists in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Artists who are not eligible to apply through these programmes can contact NIFCA for further information on residency opportunities. Some of the residencies are allocated through special exchange agreements with organisations in different parts of the world, and NIFCA also invites artists directly to undertake project-related residencies.
The project space opposite the NIFCA office is continuously used for seminars, meetings, guest lectures, screenings, small exhibitions and other projects.
