How I used my recidensy at Soumenlinna spring 2004.
My plans for the residency was to do reaserch on the video project Rats create dramafilm where I give rats the roles in a dramafilm based on the drama of Shakespeare´s Hamlet. Instead I did reaserch on the videoproject Hamlet wiht my neighbours where I cooperate with girls in a video documentary. (The two videoprojects are connected circling around the themes gender and hierarchies in western storytelling). When I arrived to Soumenlinna, Helsinki, I decided to try to find a person who would like to cooperate with me to examine the drama Hamlet.
Already my second day at Soumenlinna, I met a ten-year-old girl who wanted to cooperate with me. Her name is Channa Soye and she lived at that time on a boat on Soumenlinna with her family. She is from Holland and she speaks english which was a great benefit since I don´t speak finnish.
Channa Soye and I met twice a week and we would work on the story of Hamlet. We would analyse the story in various ways. We would play the roles for each other and critisise each other, we would discuss and make drawings and write notes about our thoughts.
Through my continous work with Channa Soye I also got to know some about how you are when you are ten years old. This also helped me a lot in my later cooperation with my ten-year-old neighbours at home in Gothenburgh.
Descripton of my work
In my work I use conceptions that most people are used to and have an opinion about - like religions, starcult, home, famous stories, tourism ... It´s not about these conceptions but I use them like a tool (almost like a sign) and combine it with something unexpected. This I do to create new conditions and new pictures in my own and others minds, to brake the habitual way of thinking. This concerns also me and my own predictions. The process always has a great importance in my work. I only realize my ideas if it has the potential to create an exciting and developing process. Here I also concider the presentation since I don´t want to keep the process only to myself.
Cloned Home/ Klonat Hem, installation, 1998. Cloned Home is a three dimensional dubble home which melts together on it´s middle line. (No mirror). I have cut the furnitures that meet the middle line and put them together again. The room is 12 square meters.
The preacher/ Prästen, performance, 1999. In autumn 1999 i decided to be a clergyman in a small town called Eslöv in south of Sweden. The occasion was an art project with the theme Christmas. As a clergyman I went out everyday for three weeks, in the central streets of Eslöv, singing and preaching my own written texts with a speaker. I´m not Christian. I wanted to challenge myself and people in Eslöv through this vulnerable performance.
What if I was a rat?, real time film, 2002. I built a home for rats, but in the scale of the rats. In this home four rats where living for five weeks. I documented their lives in the appartement with eight cameras peaking in from different angels. The scenario was, during the five weeks, directly broadcasted from nonTVTVstation, and sent to a streamed videopicture on the Internet and to several artmuseums in scandinavia.
Hamlet with my neighbours/Hamlet hemma på gården, video project, 2004. During summer 2004 I have been working with my neighbours a gang of seven ten-year-old girls. At home on our swedish backyard we have worked on the drama of Shakespeares Hamlet. In a videoinstallation I show different levels of the process from exercises to finished performance.
