The Netherlands Media Art Institute, MonteVideo/TBA presents the exhibition Nordic Light - Nordic scenes in the l990's. An presentation of contemporary art from the Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. Todays art from Northern Europe is currently attracting a great deal of international interest. Cities such as Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki are characterised by a vital and dynamic art scene. Individual artists from these capitals are represented in the foremost international museums and there is even talk of a so-called 'Nordic Miracle', which describes the explosion of creativity manifesting itself among the present generation of artists. A discussion will be organised in relation to the exhibition, which will include observations and explanations by specialists on the subject of the so-called ‘Nordic Wonder’.

The Nordic Miracle

Discussion

15 January 1999, from 14.00 to 17.00

Prior to the opening of the exhibition, a discussion will take place with curators and artists from the Nordic countries. During this meeting an analysis will be made on the various artistic-, as well as social perspectives-, which might have influenced the recent dynamism in the art scene in Northern Europe.

Participants: Lars Bang Larsen (curator Danish Contemporary Art Foundation, Copenhagen), Mark Kremer (exhibition co-ordinator Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art/NIFCA, Helsinki), Thorvaldur Thorsteinsson (artist, Iceland), Hedwig Fijen (curator, organiser Manifesta 1) and Vibeke Tandberg (artist, Norway).

The public will be invited to take part in the discussion.
