Projects 2001

ROTATION

A NIFCA project in Media space -
a collaboration with Morgenbladet

Every two weeks throughout
the year 2001

ROTATION is realized in collaboration with Morgenbladet, the leading international weekly cultural
newspaper in Norway.

A full colour double-page newspaper spread will be dedicated to NEWLY COMMISSIONED
ARTISTS´ projects every two weeks throughout the year

One of the ways of in which art can reach a wider audience is by moving beyond the gallery and into the public domain. This has been achieved in many situations around the world including media spaces - billboards, television, magazines and newspapers. Together with Morgenblaclet, the leading international weekly cultural newspaper in Oslo, NIFCA are developing this idea for a Nordic context. A full colour double-page spread of this broadsheet newspaper will be dedicated to newly commissioned artists' projects every two weeks.

Five curators - one from each of the five Nordic countries - have been invited to ask five artists in turn to participate, making a total of 25 projects throughout the year. The curators are Kari Immonen (Finland), Edda Jónsdóttir (Iceland), Sossa Jørgensen (Norway), Mats Stjernstedt (Sweden) and Jacob Fabricius (Denmark). Artists are being invited from the Nordic region and beyond.

Kari Immonen has a background in Comparative Religion and Art History. Since 1996 he has worked as exhibition officer and co-ordinator at the Waino Aaltonen Museum of Art in Turku, Finland. Since August 2000 he has worked as a curator at NIFCA. His interests range from early conceptual art to recent developments in painting.

Edda Jónsdóttir originally trained as an artist. Prompted by the lack of galleries in Iceland, she founded i8 Galleri in Reykjavik in 1995. i8 soon established itself as the only commercial gallery the country to exhibit the work of both Icelandic and international artists. The gallery is currently moving to larger premises - for further information see www.i8.is

Sossa Jørgensen was educated at Kunstakadamiet in Trondheim. In addition to her own art production she has been initiating and curating exhibitions and projects in Norway since the mid 1990s. She is co-manager of the Balkong Gallery project, one of four editors of the sound¬art web site www.ballongmagasinet.com and playing in Buckle Bunnies. Currently living in Berlin, she is saving up money to buy her first horse!

Mats Stjernstedt is a freelance writer and curator resident in Stockholm. He is a contributor to Artfortiun and co-curator of the exhibition series Syndrome at IASPIS, Stockholm 2000. He is also co-curator at Index - the Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation and co-editor of a forthcoming anthology on post-colonial studies (Stockholm: The Art Academies of Sweden & Kairos, 2001).

Jacob Fabricius is the founding director of Recent Works project space in Copenhagen. He has curated exhibitions such as PARK Momentum The Nordic Biennial of Contemporary Art in Moss, Norway. Working in public spaces has been an integral part of his practice, from Dispensing with Formalities, a project for newspaper dispensers around Copenhagen to art calls, a series of artists' project accessed by telephone.
