Thriller

The latest film by Salla Tykkä. Following her highly acclaimed film Lasso, in which she commented on Westerns, Tykkä now refers to the horror genre. Thriller works on diverse levels, exploring personal fear and guilt, as well as more explicit expressions of anger and violence. Lasso and Thriller belong to a trilogy exploring the development of a girl from childhood to adulthood.

Following a NIFCA residency at Delfina Studios in London, and a memorable appearance at the Venice Biennale with her film Lasso, NIFCA has commissioned a new work from Finnish artist Salla Tykkä. Both Lasso and Thriller are part of a trilogy which collectively explores the development of a girl from childhood to adulthood. However, whereas Trilogy's first part Lasso commented on Westerns, Thriller makes a reference to the horror genre through its cinematography and musical score. As we have come to expect from Tykkä's work, this film includes a wide range of overlapping layers, from a subtle exploration of personal fear, uncertainty and guilt, to more explicit expressions of anger and violence.

Thriller is a film commissioned by NIFCA, supported by AVEK in association with YLE.

A 48-page book has been published on Salla Tykkä, including an interview with Glasgow-based curator Francis McKee.
