Photographs by ten Nordic artists encourage us to stop by the billboards of JCDecaux in Stavanger, Tampere, Odense, Reykjavik and Malmö. In their works, the artists examine the increased forced and voluntary mobility, and the constantly changing many-facetted identities in today's society. The photographs, seasoned with humour and irony, are also exhibited in art and cultural institutions in the respective cities.
The artworks confront us with our (dis)ability to get in contact with each other. The sociologist Zygmunt Bauman has stated that in an effectively working city environment it is typical that meetings are casual and without history. Our contacts are numerous and different but also, at times, thin. At the same time, feelings of insecurity have increased. We are faced with a worldwide no-win game, in which the freedom dreams of some people are maintained at the expense of the lack of security of others. Luckily, the city is not only characterised by a disability to meet. In the city we have learnt to claim our own space, but also to give it to others. It is a matter of tolerance, of constant negotiation with - and sharing of - public space.
Art has the power of expanding our experience of the world, but it can also concentrate this experience. The theme for Art STORM is particularly actual, a topic that many people identify with today. The artists of Art STORM invite us to stop and think, reflecting on migration, identity and globalisation, with as perspective their own artistic expression in relation to these complex and multifaceted themes.
