Stop for a Moment - Painting as a Place to Be

Gävle Konstcentrum, Gävle, Sweden, 2 March - 7 April, 2002

Stop for a Moment - Painting as a Place to Be is the first of three exhibitions that examine different ways of dealing with the problematics and possibilities of painting. The title of the exhibition in itself reveals a great deal. It is a plea, a shy suggestion, even a friendly demand. It says: please, stop - look, relate and enjoy. But quietly, walking and contemplating, taking your time. Interact with the paintings and whith the exhibition venues.

Rather than presenting works which extend and stretch the limits of painting's formal medium, the exhibitions examine the multifaceted ways of working with "painting proper". The paintings in the exhibitions reflect and radiate a vivid awareness of the traditions in painting, its histories and current contexts and questions.

The exhibition is a collaboration between NIFCA and Gävle Konstcentrum.
Curators: Kari Immonen and Mika Hannula
