A series of 'events' organised by NIFCA 'New Media Air' artist-in-residence Stuart McGregor (Scotland) in collaboration with NIFCA.

'Iskea nuijalla Ajaksi Tavanmukainen Ihmiset' is an imaginary 'underground' cinema which until now has only existed in the head of it's Scottish born creator. In this imaginary place television does not exist, but entertainment is NOT a bad word. The customers raise their glasses in unison whenever someone utters Robert Louis Stevensons famous dictum "To know what you prefer instead of humbly saying 'Amen' to what the world tells you you ought to prefer, is to have kept your soul alive".

Helsinki is a city where foolish dreams can be turned into reality. Therefore, it is our pleasure to announce that 'Iskeä nuijalla Ajaksi Tavanmukainen Ihmiset' will materialise in reality for two evenings, Monday 27th October 2003 at NIFCA (Gallery Augusta) and Tuesday 28th October 2003 at Sauna Bar in Helsinki.

When the axis of meaning in Western society spins more and more around technology and consumption, this is a modest attempt to shift the emphasis back to the tactile, sensual, visceral and poetic.

Stuart McGregor takes part in NIFCA´s New Media AiR programmein Suomenlinna during September and October 2003. His film collaboration with Rob Kennedy 'Your Not Blank' will be screened as part of 'Art Now' exhibition at Tate Britain in November 2003.

If you have any questions then please email Stuart McGregor: stickist@clara.co.uk or telephone Tiina Kuhanen/NIFCA tel. 09-686 43 214.

Films

"What's So Good About Goodbye" (Colour, 9 min., Spain, 2003)

Direction, production, soundtrack by Alejandra Salinas & Aeron Bergman

As an artist couple they work in the dynamic yet much underestimated field
between documentary, narrative, sound and music. With their every choice,
they deny spectacle and pure entertainment, however unlike most protests,
they prefer to work with degrees of beauty and softness. Recipiants of ARS
Electronica Award of Distinction 2002.

"Man With a Movie Camera" a.ka. "Cheloveks Kinoapparatom" (Silent, B&W, 68 min., USSR, 1929)

Directed by Dziga Vertov, Edited by Yelizaveta Svilova, Photographed by Mikhail Kaufman. Soundtrack by Michael Nyman 2002.

An avant-garde hymn to the city. Dazzingly inventive self reflexive masterpiece of 20th Century cinema made with the all optomistic fervour of a true revolutioniary.

"Sijainen"(Colour / B&W, 23 min., Finland, 1989)

Directed by Antti Peippo.

A deeply personal film about the relationship between drawing, painting and
psychological states of mind. Cinematographer Peippo worked with director
Risto Jarva. This film was made months before his death. I was also
interested in this film because according to the Finnish Film Institute
study for 1989 this was the least viewed film by Finnish cinema going
audiences (only 583 paying customers)

"Le massacre des animaux" (Colour, 19 min., France, 2001)
Directed by Mathilde Rosier. Soundtrack by Mathilde Rosier

In this strange universe, the customary landmarks are blurred: right side,
wrong side, inside, outside no longer match.

The following pre recorded music will play suggestively whilst you talk, drink and walk.
"Shock Music" : film music of Kenyon Hopkins
"Cinema De Serge Gainsbourg" : film music of Serge Gainsbourg
