Projects 2006

In light of today’s political and cultural climate, there is once again a need to raise questions about how stories are constructed and what effects they have. What are the possibilities and the risks of using art as a way to satisfy a need for “critical documents”? What are the rights and responsibilities of the storyteller?

Participants from various fields such as art, film, media criticism and political theory will discuss the structure of narratives and the construction of history. What stories are not given space in today’s society and what alternative strategies exist for the production of images? One of the aims is to discuss the media’s increasingly monopolized representation of reality, and its correlation to the art world’s present interest in the political.

The symposium is initiated by Produktionsenheten (The Production Unit), and is a collaboration between Produktionsenheten, NIFCA –Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art and Iaspis –International Artists Studio Programme in Sweden. The project is supported by Nordisk Kulturfond.

Produktionsenheten is a network for artists working with documentary storytelling, media criticism and narrative experiments. The project focuses on a critical analysis of history writing, and how narratives and investigative journalism are used for political motives. Produktionsenheten includes: Petra Bauer, Nanna Debois Buhl, Kajsa Dahlberg, Johanna Gustafsson, Sara Jordenö, Conny Karlsson, Runo Lagomarsino, Ditte Lyngkær Pedersen and Ylva Westerlund.

Deltagare från skilda fält såsom konst, film, mediekritik och politisk teori diskuterar historieskrivning och berättarstrukturer. Vilka berättelser saknar utrymme i dagens samhälle och vilka är dom alternativa strategierna för bildproduktion? Ett av målen med symposiet är att få igång en diskussion kring medias alltmer monopoliserande verklighetsbeskrivning, och att väga detta mot konstvärldens nuvarande intresse för det politiska. Men vilka är möjligheterna och riskerna med att använda konst som ett sätt att tillfredställa ett behov av ”kritiska dokument”?

I ljuset av dagens politiska och kulturella klimat ser vi ett behov av att ännu en gång lyfta fram frågor kring berättandets konstruktioner och effekter. Vilka friheter och skyldigheter har berättaren?
