With a direct link to the project Spaces of Conflict the aim of the
panel is to continue the topic debate about the role and possibilities
of art institutions as well as the expectations to and visions for them.
The discussions can be seen in the light of the current debate about the
crisis of contemporary art, as some would put it, or the crisis in the
political imagination concerning the role of art, as others would say.
The discussions will both be formed around general viewpoints
(theoretical as well as practical) and more specific examples of
institutional situations represented by the panelists.

The panel discussion at Rooseum will take up questions of institutional
exhibition practice and the relation between physical and social space
both in everyday curatorial practice and in the visionary conception.
How can institutional space be designed and used in order to correspond
with the presented artistic or curatorial ideas? Which models already
exist? How do they work, and how did they change? And to which processes
of economies and knowledge production are they related?

The panel discussion will also connect general understandings and
reflections about art institutions with the local context of Rooseum,
that is, Malmö and the Öresund region. In order to address possibilities
today for institutions with a focus on contemporary art and the visions
for the future the panellist will be invited to take a point of
departure in the key concepts that also formed the framework for Schmidt
and Bode’s project: contribution, expectation, and alteration.
