Unfolding Perspectives is the result of a collaboration between Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, and NIFCA, Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art. It contains edited transcripts of lectures and discussions held during the three-day seminar that accompanied the opening of the ARS 01 exhibition at Kiasma in Helsinki, September 2001. It also includes post-seminar comments from the following contributors: Matti Braun, Mika Hannula, Moshekwa Langa, Antti Leppänen, Tor-Magnus Lundeby and Hans Hamid Rasmussen.
This publication aims at contributing to the worldwide debate on the themes discussed in the seminar. The specific feature of cultural debate is, that its aim is not to find any "correct" answers or solutions. Instead, its purpose is to create opportunities for people to share their experiences, and to increase our awareness of the complex situations and problems facing all cultural endeavours today. The overall feeling seems to be that a major change is taking place. With this in mind, it is crucial to try to create new interfaces between cultures, to build bridges between individuals and regions, and to open up new spaces and places of encounter. This could lead to a better understanding of our situation amid the multi-dimensional currents that characterise the contemporary world. We believe that this offers an opportunity to create a barrier against all forms of fundamentalism.
