Published as part of the RAM 4 - Survival Kit workshop in November 2003 in Helsinki. The publication introduces some of the main areas of media practice and communication technologies being organised and developed by collectives and volunteers.

The book is divided in the following sections: Media Ownership and Open Publishing, Net-Politics, Free/Libre and Open Source Software, Approaching Digital Divides and Community Networking. Introductory essays are followed by short project descriptions. These are human-scale initiatives, operating outside of corporate or governmental structures. They use communication for social purposes and are driven by a desire to see technology developed out of social contexts and the interests and needs of people.
