Nordic Baltic Residency Network 1997-2002

NIFCA'S RESIDENCY PROGRAMME
The residency programme of the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art NIFCA provides visual artists from the Nordic and Baltic countries with residencies of 2-6 months in various studios throughout the region. A NIFCA residency includes free studio and accommodation facilities, as well as a monthly grant of 5.000 FIM. The programme is run in collaboration with local artists’ organisations and aims at developing contact networks and the exchange of artists and ideas in the region.

THE STUDIOS
NIFCA's residency programme includes an average of 20 studios in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The studios available vary with each year. For 2002 there is a total of 20 studios available at 14 different locations. All studios include accommodation, and are provided rent-free for the artists' disposal. The studios and accommodations are fully furnished and equipped with standard conveniences: kitchen utensils, bed-linen, telephone, radio etc. Access to the Internet and to TV is available at most locations. At each studio there is a local contact person, who is in charge of assisting the visiting artists in any matters connected to the stay. For detailed information, visit www.nifca.org.

APPLICATION
NIFCA invites professional visual artists from the Nordic and Baltic region to apply for a residency. Applications for residencies 2002 are to be submitted by 30 April 2001. A complete application consists of:
1. A completed and signed application form. Forms are available on www.nifca.org and can be requested from NIFCA.
2. A biography containing information about education and professional artistic activity.
3. Visual material (e.g. 3 slides or a videotape or a CD-rom).

All professional visual artists in the Nordic and Baltic region are eligible to apply for a NIFCA residency. The only restrictions are:
- artists are eligible for a NIFCA residency within this programme only once within four years
- studios are usually not provided in one's country of residence
- One should have a completed art education, i.e. art students may not apply

During the past four years, the selection of artists for the programme has been made by a Nordic artist:

The selection for 2002 will be made by designer and curator Pia Kristoffersson (SE).

Applications to the residencies 2002 must be submitted by 30 April 2001 to NIFCA in Helsinki.

DENMARK

HOLLUFGÅRD ON FUNEN

The largest sculpture centre in the Nordic countries, 'Guest Studios Hollufgård', is situated next to the 500-year-old Hollufgård Manor, 5 km from Odense, on Funen island. The sculpture centre is available to both Danish and foreign artists (not limited to sculptors). Some of the facilities and workshops provided are a bronze foundry, a stonemasonry, a smithy as well as good facilities for working with plaster and clay. The artists have to bring their own electrical and crafting tools as needed. Good exhibition opportunities are offered in the Hollufgård park.

Accommodation is organised in a separate guesthouse, where the artists are provided with private bedrooms (12 m2) with shared kitchen and bathroom. Extra accommodation can be organised if the artist is accompanied by a family member.

The studio is situated in the very centre of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, a city of 420 000 inhabitants. Tallinn’s geographic location is especially suitable for those who want to make trips to other Baltic states, Helsinki, or Stockholm. Furthermore, it is the heart of Estonian art and business life and provides a good opportunity to get a glimpse of the Estonian ways of life as well as to concentrate on one’s artistic work.


The guest studio has been available for Nordic artists since 1999. It is located on the top floor of the Tallinn Art Hall, next to the Estonian Artists' Association (which also manages the studio). The studio offers a great view over the beautiful Old Town, the most historically rich part of Tallinn. The same building houses several studios for Estonian artists, a popular restaurant and café, a gallery and an artists shop. The newly renovated, well-lit studio contains working space and accommodation on two levels, 50 m2 altogether, and is fully furnished and equipped.

The Palmstierna studio building on Suomenlinna houses five studios with accommodation for Nordic and Baltic artists and invited artists from other regions in the world, and four guest apartments for invited curators, researchers and other guests at NIFCA. The studios and apartments are fully equipped and artists have free access to working space at NIFCA's office, which is situated a couple of hundred metres from the studios. The office provides access to computer and video equipment, a library, workshops, and of course an excellent opportunity to meet with artists, curators, staff and guests at NIFCA. In the project space near the office, smaller seminars, projects and meetings are continuously organised.

The historic military fortress Suomenlinna is situated on six islands off Helsinki. Suomenlinna is known for its architecture and nature preserve, and provides a peaceful environment while the very centre of the Finnish capital is only 15 minutes away and easily accessible by regular ferry connections.

Four of the studios are of similar size (32 m2) with a platform (13 m2), the fifth is a sculpture studio (77,5 m2, ceiling height 4,2 m2). The flats (33 m2) are on the first floor of the studios and consist of one room, kitchenette and bathroom. Extra accommodation (18,4 m2) can be added to two of the flats if needed for accompanying family members.

With around 3 500 inhabitants, Qaqortoq (Julianehåb in Danish) is the largest town in Southern Greenland. The town has well equipped shops, restaurants, hotels and a bank. Qaqortoq is well connected with other parts of Greenland via helicopter and boat; however, one should remember that travelling to and within Greenland requires thorough economic planning well in advance.

The accommodations are located in the South Greenland Culture Centre, about 1,5 km from the centre of Qaqortoq. The flats (35,5 m2 and 11,5 m2) are furnished and equipped, and include a kitchenette. There is a phone in the smaller flat. The visiting artists can use the work facilities of the Culture Centre.


ICELAND

Hafnarfjördur, 10 km south of Reykjavik, is a coastal town with a population of about 18 000. The municipal culture centre Hafnarborg is situated in the very centre of Hafnarfjördur, close to shops, bank, cinema, restaurants, library, swimming pool etc. There are regular direct bus connections to Reykjavik.

The studio and the flat (128 m2 altogether) are situated on the top floor of Hafnarborg with a good view over the harbour. The flat consists of two rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

A studio has been available in the Artists' House in Riga since 1998. Riga, the capital of Latvia, has 800 000 inhabitants, and is the largest city and commercial centre in the Baltics. Riga is known for its active cultural life and has good connections to other Baltic cities. The Artists' House, built in 1960 on the banks of the river Daugava in the old city centre, houses a number of artists' studios, a printing shop, the Centre for Contemporary Art, a shop for artists' materials, and the administration and gallery of the Artists' Union of Latvia.

For the time being, new accommodation facilities are being established for the artists-in-residence.


LITHUANIA

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and has 600 000 inhabitants. The studio is located in the outskirts of the Old Town, in the very centre of Vilnius. The largest Kunsthalle in the Baltics - The Contemporary Art Centre of Vilnius – is a ten-minute walk from the studio. The centre has a library as well as a café which is very popular among local artists. The Lithuanian Artists' Association is situated in a nearby building.

The studio (75 m2) consists of a work space, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The studio is furnished and equipped with basic conveniences, such as telephone and CD-player, and the Internet is accessible from the office of the Artists' Association.


NORWAY

The city of Bergen with around 250 000 inhabitants is situated on the west coast of Norway. Bergen has an active art life with an Art Academy, a school for Arts and Crafts, an art museum and a wide range of galleries. The studio is located in the culture house USF, a former sardine factory. More than 50 artists work in the centre, which is also used for various cultural activities. Additionally, there are two more studios for international artists, a popular café, a gallery, a cinema and concert spaces. The studio (95 m2) includes a kitchenette and a shower.

Separate accommodation consists of a newly renovated flat a ten-minute walk from the USF. The flat (50 m2) consists of a room, a kitchen, and a bathroom fully furnished and equipped with all conveniences.


MÁZE IN FINNMARK, NORTHERN NORWAY

Máze, which has a few hundred inhabitants, is located in a very beautiful setting 80 km from Alta and 65 km from Kautokeino in the northern province of Finnmark in Norway.

The studio with accommodation (58 m2 altogether) is located in a building where several Sámi artists have their workshops, and consists of a studio/work room, living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The studio and accommodation have all basic furniture and equipment, and artists going to Máze will be provided with a portable computer which can be connected to the Internet through the studio’s phone line. A stay in Máze also provides the opportunity to research the northern region, especially during the summer season. Due to the long distances, travelling to Máze by car is definitely an advantage.

Svalbard is a stretch of islands under Norwegian jurisdiction. Spitsbergen is the largest of these, with about 1 500 inhabitants. The largest centre is Longyearbyen. Apart from Longyearbyen there are other settlements, one of the largest being the Russian mining community Barentsburg with about 1 000 inhabitants.

Recently, the traditional mining has been superseded by research activities and tourism. In Longyearbyen you can find restaurants, well equipped shops, cinema, visiting theatres, etc.

The average temperature is about -14 C in the winter and +6 C in the summer. The midnight sun shines from April to August, whereas the dark period lasts from the end of October to mid-February.

The studio and flat are situated in a renovated former shop, which houses for example the Galleri Svalbard. The artist-in-residence is provided with a private room (14m2) with shared bathroom, kitchen and living room.


SWEDEN

Konstepidemin is very conveniently located in Gothenburg, about ten minutes from the city centre, near the Botanic garden and with good coastal connections.

More than 100 artists work at the Konstepidemin, a former hospital complex of 4000 m2. In addition to the studios, the complex houses a restaurant, four galleries, a theatre and seminar rooms.

The studio (83 m2) consists of an equipped work space (39 m2, ceiling 3,35 m), a bedroom, and a kitchen. The living space is fully furnished and equipped with TV and telephone (billed separately). The artists are provided free access to computers and office equipment, a graphic workshop and a darkroom. Konstepidemin provides the artists-in-residence with free access tickets to the museums. There are also good opportunities for exhibiting in Konstepidemin’s project space.

The studio is located in the premises of IASPIS in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in central Stockholm. In the same building there are eleven international IASPIS studios, exhibition halls and galleries, an art library, the administrations of the Academy of Fine Arts and of the Swedish Visual Arts Fund etc.

In addition to the studio (min. 20m2), the artists have access to computer equipment at IASPIS office, and to the more advanced workshops of the Academy of Fine Arts and CRAC.

Separate accommodation is organised at the Art Hotel at Johannesgatan 12, a ten-minute walk from IASPIS.

The studio house Malongen is situated in the Söder district, a pleasant and lively area in the centre of Stockholm. It houses several artist studios for local artists.

The studios are situated in beautiful surroundings by the sea, next to the Nordiska Akvarellmuseet. There are a total of five studios, built at the same time as the museum and opened last summer. Each studio is 52 m2 and consists of a workroom, a kitchenette, a sleeping loft, and a bathroom. The studios are located on an islet with a bridge to the museum. Nearby, you can find a bank, shops, restaurants and a library. There are regular direct bus connections to Gothenburg.
