Artist-in-Residence exchange program between the Nordic countries and
Beirut, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Shanghai, Singapore, Yangon.

The bilateral artist-in-residence exchange program for professional visual artists was launched by NIFCA in 2002 in collaboration with residency hosts in New Delhi (IN), Akiyoshidai (JP), Taipei (TW). For 2006 it has been developed in collaboration with residency hosts in Beirut, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Shanghai, Singapore, Yangon. These are partners working in an engaged manner that we at NIFCA have got to know through our collaborations and networks during the past years.

The program aims to negotiate cultural differences, explore the potential to engage in inter and cross cultural activities, as well as to further art practices. The program is developed in negotiation with the residency hosts. Through open call, 6 artists based in the Nordic region are selected by an invited panel for residencies at each of the hosts. Reciprocally, NIFCA hosts 6 artists, at its center in Helsinki, selected by the residency hosts from their respective regions. The duration of each residency is planned to be 2 months. Residency times: April-October 2006.

The Nordic countries comprise: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the autonomous territories Faroe Islands, Greenland, Åland Islands.


How to apply

All professional visual artists based in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the autonomous territories Faroe Islands, Greenland, Åland Islands are eligible to apply.

The only restrictions is:
* one should have a completed art education by the application deadline, i.e. students may not apply

All on-line applications accepted, which have been submitted by 31 January,
12 o'clock midnight in the Nordic region, respective time differences acknowledged.

First register as user in the system. Then, in a new window the application form becomes available, by clicking on 'create new application'. The application form is easy to use and fill in. The required information includes: CV, description of artistic practice, motivation for residency and documentation of work. Please remember to click ‘save’ after filling in each part in the application. Attachments may be enclosed electronically, as well as, be sent in by postal mail. If using postal mail, please, use the reference number received from the application system.

You can log in to the system as many times as required and continue filling in the different parts and editing, before submitting the form. Documentation of artistic work and other electronic enclosures can be attached to the on-line form, saving the trouble and cost of sending attachments by postal mail.


All the residencies include:

• Studios or access to work space
• Accommodation
• Monthly grant (840 euro/month)
• Travel grant to cover travel expenses to and from the residency host
• Artist presentations in the artist gallery at www.nifca.org
• Various opportunities to create contacts and participate in local activities and/or concentrate on individual projects

The residencies are planned to be 2 months. Please see below, for more information on opportunities at each location and possible specifications regarding the time of the residency. If a residency artist wants to bring along family members, the artist needs to make a separate agreement about this with the hosting organizations.

Selection process

The artists will be selected, in negotiation with the residency hosts, by an international panel with three members, who wish to use this opportunity to gain knowledge of the work of a multitude of contemporary artists in the Nordic region.

Results will be announced in mid-March 2006.
