Centre for Music & Technology
The Centre for Music & Technology is the youngest department of the Sibelius Academy, Finland's premiere music university, formed in 1998 from the SACMUS computer music studio. CM&T supports innovative teaching and research in a broad range of music and technology related areas. Students of the 5.5yr music technology masters course provided by CM&T have the opportunity to specialise in Electro-Acoustic Music, Studio Recording & Production or Media & Sonic Arts. CM&T has many guests both from Finland and abroad who give lectures, workshops and occasionally concerts. With about 30 students staff and researchers, CM&T offers a small but lively community environment housed within the Sibelius Academy's city centre building at Rautatiekatu.
Facilities available for the artists in residence
Studio OSMO, our dedicated electro-acoustic and computer music teaching and production studio would be bookable for blocks of up to 3hrs a day for the artist in residence. This a well equipped studio based on a ProTools TDM system. The studio is connected directly to our internet connection, intranet and audio backup server.
AARRE Project Space is under development as our main media and sonic arts teaching and experimental project facility. It houses media and sonic arts project server aura.siba.fi and aura-atelier project plus 2x Mac OS X and 4x Linux workstations with a range of open source audio and image editing and manipulation software. Additional network features and connectivity with other spaces will be added to this facility over the coming year.
The building houses a 130 seat concert space with 100 loud speakers in the round and a larger classical concert hall. There are also a number of informal venues in the vicinity. We have some portable video and audio recording equipment and a good selection of gear for studio recording use.
Possibilities and preferences for the residency artist
Artist may apply either to come for up to 2 months during March-April, July-August or September-December depending on the theme of their proposal:
Mar-Apr 2004 Public Sonic Space / Audio Architecture
Jul-Aug 2004 Preference may be given to proposals relating in some way to activities and themes surrounding the ISEA 2004 symposium (see isea2004.net). Relevant symposium themes for us include Interfacing Sound and/or Wireless Experience. [NB: selection for this residency will not guarantee inclusion in ISEA2004 program and vice versa]
Sept-Dec 2004 Open Theme
We would expect the artists to take an initiative to get involved in the daily life of CM&T and to make a fresh creative contribution. However, artists also need to be flexible and independent in their project work.
