Greenland -- South Greenland Culture Centre in Qaqortoq

QAQORTOQ - JULIANEHÅB (GREENLAND)

With about 3.500 inhabitants, Qaqortoq (Julianehåb in Danish) is the largest town in southern Greenland. There are boat and helicopter connections to other towns and villages, though travelling in Greenland requires thorough economic and practical planning. The climate is sub-arctic, with an average summer temperature of +10 C. Good outdoors clothes are a necessity, but there are well-stocked shops, where you can get most things you need, except artists' materials. Qaqortoq also has a restaurant, an inn and a hotel, and a bank. The local currency is the Danish krone. The main languages are Greenlandic and Danish. English is spoken to some extent.

The two artists' accommodations are located on the ground floor of the South Greenland Culture Centre, which is about 1.5 km from the centre of Qaqortoq. One flat is about 35.5 m2 with toilet, bath and kitchenette, and the other 11.5 m2 with kitchenette (toilet and bath in the hall). Both flats are furnished and include linen and cooking utensils. Artists in the larger flat may, when necessary, be accompanied by a family member. The visiting artist has the right to use the studio and workshop of the Culture Centre, and its other facilities by special agreement.

A telephone (+299 642511) can be installed at an extra charge (in the smaller flat only).
