"Art is very much like rock'n'roll
you basically have to be able to dance to it in order for it to
exist"
(Lawrence Weiner, SIKSI 1995)
The distinction in recent contemporary art
between what constitutes a "pop video" and what is "video
art" has become blurred to the point at which grey areas
begin to arise. The implications of this cross cultural shift
are both seductive and problematic, opening up new areas of discussion
and debate around band branding, the commodification of art and
the question of whether this type of cross-cultural inbreeding
leads to cultural perdition?
Metallic KO will offer Scottish and Finnish
artists working across the field of audio-visual culture an opportunity
to present their work within a critical enviroment, while offering
an audience the opportunity to
experience and participate in a diverse range of contemporary
art and music performances and debate.
Torsten Lauschmann - Performing LIVE and
presentation.
As a photographer, filmmaker and VJ, Torsten Lauschmann celebrates
glitches, and out-takes, bits in between and images that might
be easy to ignore. Lauschmann is currently on a Trans European
busking tour under the guise of Slender Whiteman where he will
launch his solar powered dub system. He lives and works in Glasgow.
TOIMINTO - Performing LIVE
Toiminto plays all kinds of electronic listening music and
likes to mess around with different genres, mix them up and add
some spicy sounds on top. Tracks are produced mostly with old
tracker software, analog synths and some modified toys. He Lives
and works in Tampere.
PINK TWINS - Performing LIVE
"Finnish electro underground artists Pink Twins recreated
their
electroacoustic set before a wide-eyed crowd, employing a full
gamut of noises to the tune of their own mutual impulses; these
twins are actually brothers who alight from the smoldering electromusical
hotbeds of Helsinki."
The Twins most recent project Framestein
is an advanced tool for audiovisual compositions.
SHADAZZ - Presentation and talk.
Shadazz is a multi media label based in Glasgow attempt to
distribute

N&B Research Digest - Playback
N&B is the project of Alexei Borisov & Anton Nikkilä.
They will premiere the two new releases from their label.
"Antique noise, experimental hip hop, distorted rock shapes
and low
resolution isolationism from the age of cassette culture. "An
intermittently stunning document of rusting darkness" on
"Pilottilasit - Samples from Helsinki Underground 1981-1987"
They live and work between Moscow and Helsinki.
MIKA TAANILA - Presentation and talk
An artist, film-maker and documentarist, Mika Taanila integrates
and goesbeyond the various planes of contemporary art. His films,
"pop videos" and installations are built according to
the principles of connection, interaction and collaboration (for
example with Mika Vainio). Between sound and image, between the
latest electronic culture and technological aspirations of the
1960s, between documentary film and advanced experiment, between
fiction and reality, Taanila is working out a novel and protean
approach to our representations of modernity and progress. He
lives and works in Helsinki.
LIISA LOUNILA - Presentation and talk
"Lounila finds her imagery and expression from crime
media, experimental video art, horror films, and music videos.
POPCORN is a melancholy piece. The melancholy is generated by
the tension between innocence and jadedness. In the installation
there is a group of young people who form their own miniature
world, joined together by unquestioned concentration on a simple,
ritual performance. Although the piece focuses on reality captured
in a single moment, the melancholy tells us that the moment has
gone by for good.
An additional dimension is provided by the soundscape (Nu Science)"
She lives and works in Helsinki.
WILL BRADLEY - Mediating discussion
Bradley is an independent writer and curator based in Glasgow.
He plays drums with Life Without Buildings.
