About myself
My name is Ylva Westerlund. I live and work in Malmö, Sweden, where I have a studio in the studio collective Cirkulationscentralen. In my artistic work I have been dealing with issues of deconstruction of
ideolicical structures. In the process of trying to analyze the relation between different systems of representation I experiment with creating fusions between seemingly opposite views. As models for my work I often use preexisting formats, such as rethorical speaches, manifestos, posters and banners.
My recidency at Hafnarborg, Hafnarfjördur, Iceland
In march 2004 I arrived in Hafnarfjördur in Iceland for a recidency granted by NIFCA- Nordic Air.
At Hafnarfjordur I was met by the personnel at the Hafnarborg Culturehouse, where my studio and apartement was situated. The following two months I read and made drawings and plans for an exhibition, at Göteborgs konsthall, that I was going to participate in the following autumn. I developed ideas on making a sculpture of Frankensteins monster and somehow connect it to a disscusion on democracy and gender science. I had a really nice, quiet time- reading and also making trips out to amazing nature scenery around at tne Reykjanes penisula. Apart from this I also visited Reykjavik from time to time, to see exhibitions and spend quality time with my friends Unnar and Elsa. Unnar, who also is an artist, introduced me to some other artists. Most of them had studios at the collective ”Klink o Banki”, located in town central. Through these artists I saw an art scene that was both vibrant and inspiring. Hopefully they rubbed something off on me, we´ll see..
