Sweden -- Rooseum in Malmö

Rooseum Center for Contemporary Art

Rooseum is located in central Malmö and only 45 minutes from Copenhagen. An important element of the activities of Rooseum is to take part in the production of art. In order to achieve and support this Rooseum is making one of our studios available for the NIFCA West-Balkan AiR and Nordic AiR residency programme. The visiting artists at Rooseum are provided with a studio located on the first floor of the exhibition building and an apartment in the office building. The studio has access to Internet and shared phone. It is entirely up to the individual how they want to use their space. Each artist has different requirements of the studio, some have used it as an office, others as a project space to show their work, offering it to an audience to critique. The studios serve as a playground for experimentation where an immediate response can be obtained by the artist to new work. The studios offer a unique opportunity for artists and visitors to be able to meet and talk and have a personal encounter with the processes behind art practises.

In Nordic AiR 2006 residencies are available during February-May 2006.

In West Balkan AiR 2005 one residency is available for November-December 2005

Rooseum opened as an art space in 1988 in a renovated power station from 1901. Starting in 2001, a new programme and approach of the Rooseum was launched. It was time to create something new, to be able to live up to the demands of being cutting edge with ability to respond to today’s artists demands on an institution of contemporary art. Rooseum has become more a place for experimentation, questioning and discovery – an active rather than one of passive observation. One could characterize it as part community center, part laboratory and part academy, not only an institution with the established showroom function. Besides the main exhibition hall Rooseum today consists of a microcinema with film programmes, an archive, and an international residency programme. Furthermore we collaborate with Malmö Art Academy on an international postgraduate academic course, Critical Studies. We also run a programme with projects taking place outside of Rooseum as well as we host smaller external initiatives in our Open Forum in support of the local scene.

The studio is located on the first floor in the exhibition hall of Rooseum. This floor is primarily dedicated to research and production and is besides two studios hosting a Test Site for the participants of the postgraduate course, Critical Studies, a collaboration between Rooseum and Malmö Art Academy.
The studio is 35m2, the apartment 25m2.
